Pinot Noir

As a lover of cool climate Pinot Noir, I want each of my Pinots to speak eloquently of their birthplace. Site is so critical in Pinot Noir, and I choose each vineyard, whether from the Sonoma Coast, Petaluma Gap or Russian River, for its unique character.

Much like the accent you unconsciously acquired in the place where you grew up, aspects derived from terroir shine through each wine with every vintage. You can taste the climate, the site and the farmer’s conscientiousness in your glass. That is magic to me. One of my favorites, and in fact, the flagship vineyard of the Blagden brand, is Sangiacomo, a storied spot that yields wines of superb complexity, horsepower, age-worthiness and richness. And yet, they exhibit a deft and unflappable grace. It is an honor to make wine from such a stalwart property, and it has become our go-to source for superbly balanced, food-worthy Pinot every year.

Because I love variety—and I hope you do, too—I sometimes seek out other vineyards of indelible character to add depth and individuality to the Blagden portfolio.

2017 Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Roberts Road

Beautiful clarity of light ruby that fades to the rim. This wine opens with ripe cherry, cranberry, raspberry, and alpine strawberry with earthy Burgundian scents of forest floor and a tiny bit of black peppercorn. On the palate, this medium weight Pinot shows sweet, ripe cherries, pomegranate and black tea with a touch of orange spice and clove. Lean and elegant with a full mid-palate and a long consistent and lingering finish. It is well integrated with cedar and tar as the wine opens in the glass. This is an earthy, Old World style Pinot Noir.

Balanced and complex, this wine is drinkable now, but should age nicely for another 10+ years.
